Former civil defense shelter in Güdingen

Former civil defense shelter comprised of a tunnel system that was built in the 1960s. Access via a number of stairways at different points of the shelter, secured by large steel doors. In the case of an attack with atomic, biological or chemical weapons, the bunker could have provided shelter for 1.800 people. The interior is still complete, intact, and in its original state. The tunnels were equipped with compact folding wall-mounted seats and bunk beds that would have needed to be used in turns. Power sets, air filter plants, and electrical switch boxes still in their original condition. Bathrooms equipped with toilets, long rows of wash basins. Kitchen and first aid station also still present. The walls have been painted with a horizontal stripe in phosphorescent green, which glows in the dark in case of a power outage.
Given the unstable state of the world, concerns about peace and safety are justified. In the 1960s, when nuclear warfare was, of course, a persistent and terrifying threat, Germany pressed ahead the construction of concrete bunkers with substantial effort and at considerable expense.
This civil defense shelter, which is located under the A6 motorway, remained largely unnoticed by the public. It was only when a book was published in 2011 that more people became aware of the bunker’s existence. The museum bunker is an impressive way to immerse yourself in Cold War history.
